Hey Mike, I really enjoy watching your videos. You made a really good point on comparing college education to your real world education. Since the Web Design field constantly changes, I would have to agree that I’m very skeptical about high price schools for trades like web design. There are resources out there that anyone can obtain to a professional level on websites such as w3schools and lynda(like you mentioned in the video).
I think tutoring would also be another great option and I’m sure it would cost less than any university level course. However, depending on where you live, those can be hard to find.
I agree with you 100%. I really hate when I see BA and Masters degree in job descriptions for some web design jobs. I’m like “Really!”. I like doing the 1 or 2 day classes that I get from local colleges.. or a tutorial online. Something I can get quick and practice right away. That’s why I’m so grateful for your site. Im actually moving my towards becoming a UI Designer. Even though I had several Web Designer jobs…UI is a new journey that I want to explore. I just have to keep practicing. Thanks again for you videos!
Great video, as always, Mike. It’s very encouraging to hear that you don’t need a degree to work in the web design field.
I’m also looking forward to your Photoshop web design course.
Thanks Mike for the great videos. I just wanted to ask you where have you posted the upcoming photoshop course news on your website? I tried to find where you have mentioned it but didn’t seem to find it. I am looking forward for that course. You are a good teacher and an amazing person for sharing all such useful information with us.
Another great video Mike. I agree 100%. I have learned so much using your course, lynda and sites like treehouse which is one I’d recommend to anyone as well. I have paid a fraction of the price for even a trade school. I think college could be good for those who aren’t sure what they want to do yet. Some want to be a graphic designer and design school does teach a lot but if web design is the trade of choice college is not needed. In a previous blog you mentioned that those who write these job ads don’t necessarily know the position they are describing and fill the requirements with everything they can think of. My point is if you think you have those skills needed for the job anyway degree or not GO FOR IT!.
@Rob C. – Thanks so much for signing up and for posting some nice feedback. Glad you’re getting some good value from my course. And yes, Fireworks is awesome!
@Daniel – You’re welcome
@Kazim – I mentioned in one of my videos or podcasts that I’m working on a Photoshop training course. Its one of those things that many people request. I have a huge network of people that use Fireworks but also a large number of people that prefer Photoshop. I want to provide training for both whether you use Fireworks or Photoshop. I will keep everyone posted when its coming out. Not there yet, but working on it.
@Kris – Well said Kris! Yes, wherever you can get professional online training (hands on tutorials) for under $100 or small monthly payments, its well worth it. Its direct training that will impact your work, allow you to improve your skills and allow you to put those things into action today. A degree in this industry doesn’t mean anything as it does in other industries.
How I wish I had all this advice before I went to grad school and got further in debt…smh man only if I would have known…
It’s currently 2am and I’ve been watching your videos like crazy for these last few hours. I’m currently in my second year of computer science and highly doubting my life choices. I’ve always had a tough time being a school person and am always way more focused when I’m learning things that pertain to what I want in my career. (I’m not quite sure why I have to take psychology/french/calculus and all this other crap to get a degree in computer science. I’ve been looking into web design for a while now and am really falling in love with the industry. Thank you for these videos and you’re definitely helping people like me decide if its the industry for me. Cheers!
